9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily
Something wicked is coming to Lauritzen Gardens- this year's spring flower show, Wicked Plants: Colorful Characters from the Dark Side of the Plant World.
Visitors to the show will enter the ramshackle old greenhouse of Dr. Violet Mandrake, known around town as “The Mad Botanist.” Once a respected scientist who grew plants for her research projects, our botanist found herself drawn to the dark and dangerous side of the botanical world. As with many a gardener, what began as curiosity blossomed into obsession, and she began filling her greenhouse with the most notorious characters she could grow. The show displays plants that can paralyze, strangulate, and cause derangement as highlighted in Amy Stewart's book "Wicked Plants: The Weed that Killed Lincoln's Mother & Other Botanical Atrocities". And now, something wicked is coming to Lauritzen Gardens. It's mayhem under glass, as the Floral Display Hall will feature many of nature's worst.
Those brave enough to wander into the show will find benches, planting beds, and other nooks and crannies crammed with botanical bad guys. While keeping an eye out for the eccentric and unpredictable scientist, visitors can view first-hand the fascinating and frightening plant collection that Dr. Mandrake has assembled. The show will build on the many amazing plant portraits in Stewart's book to delight the mind and inspire curiosity about the evildoers that may be lurking in our own backyards.
