Own a piece of local history...
Lauritzen Gardens has a long history of using architectural remnants in its own
gardens and displays. The Victorian garden, constructed in 2001, showcases
wonderful pieces of terracotta and carved stone, which were collected from
historical local buildings, as well as an actual structure, an original
bierstube from the 1898 Trans-Mississippi Exposition. The new Marjorie K.
Daugherty Conservatory also features a stunning piece, "The North Wind", which
was obtained from a building in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Now guests have the opportunity to own a piece of local history at a two-day
architectural artifact trunk show. Guests of this event may view and purchase
original pieces (as well as some reproductions) saved from historic buildings
in Omaha and the surrounding areas. Pieces collected and for sale are made from
a wide variety of hand-carved stone, terracotta, iron and other materials. Each
piece will add design, character and history to one's garden or home. Also on
display will be a images of many old Omaha buildings and sites in books, maps
and postcards assembled by local collectors.
The trunk show takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 2 and
Sunday, April 3 in the foyer of the visitor and education center. Questions
about this event can be addressed to the director of visitor services, Jennifer
Evans, by email at j.evans@omahabotanicalgardens.org.
