The Amazing Stinko

A BIG stink is coming to the BIG O!

We're on a bloom alert for one of the most unique and intriguing plants in the world, the Amorphophallus titanum, or titan arum. Our specimen, dubbed "The Amazing Stinko!," is growing steadily and when growth levels off, the spathe will unfurl and the spadix will release its extremely foul odor (think rotting fruit, meat, and fish).

At botanic gardens and universities around the world, titan arums have only recently been coaxed into bloom after many years of careful cultivation. Public viewing of this unique plant has occurred a limited number of times in the United States and The Amazing Stinko is the first specimen to be put on public display in Nebraska.

The Amazing Stinko! is on display in the tropical house of the Marjorie K. Daugherty Conservatory and will remain on display until it finishes its bloom cycle. Because we want everyone to be able to experience this "AMAZING" plant, admission is FREE until its bloom cycle finishes.

For updates on the plants growth and stench levels, follow The Amazing Stinko! on Twitter (@AmazingStinko) or visit the garden's social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter (@LauritzenGarden) and Instagram.

Come witness this true marvel of the plant kingdom.
