Dinosaur-themed Events and Programs

 

Saturday, January 26 | 8 to 9 a.m. | Dinosaur Yoga for Families 

Yoga poses are going prehistoric in this dinosaur-themed yoga sequence designed for the whole family! Bring your mat and stand like a stegosaurus, dip down like a diplodocus, and breathe like a brachiosaurus among incredible dinosaur sculptures in this indoor class with Megan Roth. Classes are designed to encourage playful, mindful movement for all ages and abilities. Pre-registration is required by January 24. One registration is good for the whole family (can be any combination of four people, with at least one adult participating). Please bring a mat or a towel. $15, $10 for garden members.   

  

  

Saturday, February 9 | 10 to 11:30 a.m. | Family Workshop: Fossils 

Spend time as a family at Lauritzen Gardens. Each month families will complete a craft project together and explore a related garden with a guide. One craft will be provided per family (any combination of adults and children, as long as one adult is participating). Includes garden admission. This month families will take a guided walk through our dinosaur exhibit and make a salt dough fossil creation. $25, $15 for garden members.   

  

  

Friday, February 15 | 10 to 11:30 a.m. | Read and Grow at the Garden: Fun with Fossils 

In order for curious minds to bloom, it is essential to plant a love of reading at a young age. Join the Omaha Public Library in the garden this month for stories that celebrate dinosaurs, fossils, and exploration, and discover the joys of nature, movement, music, and literature. Programs are presented one Friday per month and are geared towards preschool aged children, but all ages are welcome. This is a free program, but pre-registration is requested. Programs will be held outdoors and will be moved indoors if necessary.

For two nights only, the garden will turn into a prehistoric playground for adults only. So you're over 21 and still love dinosaurs. Or maybe you like the idea of perusing the indoor gardens with a drink in hand. These nights let you unleash your inner child, explore the garden without children, get a fossil fix, and participate in fun activities. Omaha's most RAWR-some happy hour is perfect for a date night or an evening with friends. $10 members, $20 non-members, must be 21 to attend. Admission includes one drink ticket. Cash-only bars will be available with a selection of beer and wine, as well as a signature cocktail. The café will be open for dinner service.

Saturday, March 16 | 1:30 p.m. | Painting with Pinot's Palette: Two Mini Canvas Cute-a-saurus 

Simple color mixes and recognizable shapes make these two mini cute-a-saurus paintings perfect for little ones and their parent/guardian to complete together. Enjoy customizing your own prehistoric masterpieces on mini canvases! Guests enjoy a no-experience-required art class—all supplies included—directed by trained, local artists, who guide guests step-by-step through the featured paintings. Admission to the garden is included and participants may explore the larger than life exhibit Dinosaur UpROAR while their paint dries. $45, $35 garden members. Each registration is good for one child and one adult. Pre-registration is required by March 9.  

  

  

Friday, March 22 | 5:30 p.m. | Dinos at Twilight Tour 

Join a trained docent in exploring the Marjorie K. Daugherty Conservatory and the Dinosaur UpROAR exhibit on Friday evening before heading to a show or dinner. Registration is required to ensure the proper docent to participant ratio. Cost is $5 for members and $15 for non-members. Pre-registration is required.  

  

Thursday, March 28 | 7 p.m. | The Great Paleo Panel 

For those who can't get enough of dinosaurs (and who can?), Lauritzen Gardens will be hosting an evening with distinguished scientists working in various aspects of paleontology, the study of fossil animals and plants. This panel will feature paleobotanist Dr. Mackenzie Taylor, vertebrate paleontologist Dr. George Engelmann, paleoecologist Dr. Karen Chin, and paleobotanist Dr. Garland (Gary) Upchurch, who will discuss their respective work in paleontology and conduct an interactive Q&A session with attendees. The cafe will be open to purchase dinner prior to the lecture and a complimentary dessert reception will follow. $15, $10 garden members. Pre-registration is required by March 21.   

  

  

Saturday, April 6 | 1:30 p.m. | Painting with Pinot's Palette: Monty the Dinosaur 

Monty is a triceratops. His favorite things include playing with his friends and eating plants. Enjoy customizing your own prehistoric masterpiece on an 11" x 14" canvas in this session with Pinot's Palette. Guests enjoy a no-experience-required art class, all supplies included- directed by trained, local artists, who guide guests step-by-step through the featured painting. Admission to the garden is included and participants may explore the larger-than-life exhibit Dinosaur UpROAR while their paint dries. Designed for preschool to 12 year olds. $35, $25 for garden members. Pre-registration is required by March 30.  

  

  

Saturday, April 13 | 8 to 9 a.m. | Dinosaur Yoga for Families

Sunday, April 14 | 2 to 4 p.m. | Painting with Pinot's Palette: Beautiful Brontos 

Take a step back through time, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth, in this misty landscape. Paint these beautiful brontosauri, customize your own prehistoric masterpiece, and enjoy liquor-infused desserts by Carried Away Confections. Guests enjoy a no-experience-required art class—all supplies included—directed by trained, local artists, who guide guests step-by-step through the featured paintings. Admission to the garden is included and participants may explore the larger than life exhibit Dinosaur UpROAR while their paint dries. $45, $35 for garden members. Pre-registration is required by April 7.  

  

  

Wednesday, April 24 | 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. | Adult Field Trip: Fossils and Fauna in the State Capital 

It's a BIG day, packed with fossils, fauna, and fun. Explore Morrill Hall's world famous collection of ancient elephants and see spectacular fossil rhinos, camels, and horses that once lived in Nebraska. Travel back in time to meet the pterosaurs and the ancestors of modern-day birds in the planetarium show Dinosaurs at Dusk. Then enjoy the beauty of Lincoln's Sunken Gardens in its spring glory. Trip includes bus transportation, boxed lunch, entrance to Morrill Hall, planetarium show, and a guided tour of Sunken Gardens. $55, $45 for garden members. Pre-registration is required by April 10.
